Chef David Green Thompson

I’m David, the chef and creative mind behind Bafana Bafana Foods in Owen Sound, Ontario. I was born with a love for food and storytelling, and over the years I’ve cooked my way through family kitchens, college, busy restaurants, cruise ships, resorts, and pop-ups — each one teaching me something new about flavour, people, and hospitality.

My cooking is South African–inspired comfort food, with a focus on bold flavours, warmth, and generosity. I’m happiest when I’m stirring a pot, grilling something delicious, or building a menu that tells a story — whether it’s for a farmers’ market, a special event, or an intimate dinner. I believe good food doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should always be made with care.

Community is at the heart of what I do. I love working with local farms and partners, feeding neighbours at markets and events, and creating spaces where people can slow down, share a meal, and feel taken care of. Every plate that leaves my kitchen is cooked the way I’d cook for family — with time, intention, and a little bit of fun.
